The result of frantic inbreeding, Charles II of Spain was born with severe mental and physical disabilities including the inability to chew his own food due to the deformities in his jaw. He was also fed by wet nurses until he was about 5 or 6 and didn’t walk until he was almost fully grown. On top of all this, he was barely literate. Prince Charming!

Every now and then I get obsessed with the Habsburgs. I guess they’re like the pugs of the aristocratic world. This is King Charles II of Spain, painted between the 1670s and 1680s.

Mary’s half brother, James Stewart, Earl of Moray. He rose in rebellion against Mary, plotted the murder of her husband, accused her of the crime, forced her to abdicate, generally badmouthed her, and ruled as Regent until his assassination.

On 10 February 1567 there was an explosion at Kirk o’Field in Edinburgh where the king was staying. The house had been mined, gunpowder packed into the foundations and the whole thing blown apart. The bodies of Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, and his servant were found in the orchard some ‘sixty or eighty steps’ from the house. Darnley was wearing only his nightgown with his hand covering his genitals and his servant was a few yards away with nis nightshirt up around his waist, wearing a nightbonnet and one slipper. Next to the bodies was a chair, a length of rope, a dagger, Darnley’s nightgown and what might have been a quilt. Neither had a single mark on their body. Most sources say they were strangled, but the lack of bruising suggests they may have been suffocated.
It’s totally like Cluedo.
